THE BROTHERLY LOVERS

Nice steady fuzz attack on this one. This one's a bit beat up...dug deep again in the vault to rescue it! This is on the ESKEE record label.

  1. The Brotherly Lovers was a group out of Queens, New York City, New York who started playing together in the bass player's basement. The leader and rhythm guitar player was George Grant, an off-Broadway singer/actor (he performed in The Fantastiks for five years before entering the folk/rock scene). He was an extremely talented individual who eventually became quite successful as a writer/producer in the T.V./Radio jingle business in collaboration with David Lucas. The other members of the group were Mike Ginex - Lead Guitar, Ray Stankes - Electric Bass and Richie Laxton - Drums. The group got their first break when their manager, Syd Shaw, arranged to have them audition as a background band for an upcoming Leslie Gore West Coast tour. The guys had just finished recording "Was A Lie" and were anxious to get some publicity and air play. Their first engagement accompanying Leslie Gore was at Basin Street East, a famous and then struggling jazz spot on the East Side that was trying to appeal to pop/rock audiences. On the billing was Leslie, The Brotherly Lovers and Mitch Ryder And The Detroit Wheels...their "Ginny Take A Ride" had just been released. After the club gig was finished the group and Leslie rehearsed her tour book and went on to do engagements along the West Coast from San Jose to Santa Maria before hitting Hollywood and the Slate Brothers Club on LaCieniga Blvd. The group and Leslie performed on different episodes of the T.V. show "Shindig" while there.

The group made a number of auditions while they were in Hollywood. One in particular was a new T.V. show that was in development about a group called "The Monkees". Needless to say they didn't make it.
